Insecurity

Monotype

Artist Statement: March 1, 2022 - monotype party at Salmagundi Club tonight and my mind was wandering over what image from past vacations should be my subject. The unsettling news about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine switched my focus, to my need to have more relevant art from my heart. I dashed out of my apartment in search of a florist with sunflowers, symbol of Ukraine. Result – the monotype of my hand in the sign of peace around a single sunflower: “Stand by U.”

From that night to the next 3 monthly monotype parties, I delved into my subject, using my hand as part of the imagery as a way to personally connect me with the Ukrainians in the war and those running from the destruction. Next came “Bring the Light” of a prayer candle.

If only the terrible reports of suffering would end. They did not. “Insecurity” embodies one of the important challenges of life without knowing where or when you will ever have food.

And then the plight of those who no longer have a place to live, on the run to a sanctuary somewhere with “Only What U Can Carry.”

Through this series, my personal expectations for my art were dramatically altered. My epiphany – RELEVANT art from my heart.
