Atlas obscura

Photograph

Artist Statement: Atlas obscura is a book and a website devoted to "curious and wondrous travel destination."

I spent years aiming to make photographs that reproduce reality as literally as possible. Now I want to risk moving beyond the literal to explore that deeper reality that brings the world to life. I didn't know, when I passed this arrangement in a shop window in Philadelphia, that "Atlas Obscura" is a real book. Drawing on the meaning of the word obscura - shadowy or indistinct - I just thought it would be wonderful to be able to sit and peruse a collection of maps that could help us find our way through those shadowy and indistinct parts of our own life journey.

Bio: Catherine D. Kerr is a photographer, writer, preacher, priest, wife, mother, grandmother, and music lover. Her work is frequently included in exhibitions near her home in Bucks County, PA, including most recently the 2022 Phillips Mill Photography Exhibition and the 2022 Diocesan Invitational Art Exhibit at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral. She has led quiet days on contemplative photography and is a firm believer that all art is spiritual practice. She approaches photography as a discipline of receptivity to God’s light and God’s grace manifest in this world.
