Love

Photograph

Artist Statement: "Philadelphia" is a combination of two Greek words: love (phileo) and brother (adelphos). The city was named by its founder, William Penn, who envisioned a city of religious tolerance where no one would be persecuted."

I spent years aiming to make photographs that reproduce reality as literally as possible. Now I want to risk moving beyond the literal to explore that deeper reality that brings the world to life. This iconic sculpture designed by Robert Indiana has been photographed, painted, printed on posters and made into coasters, among other things, yet Philadelphia residents and tourists alike never seem to tire of it. Because who, after all, isn't looking for love?

Bio: Catherine D. Kerr is a photographer, writer, preacher, priest, wife, mother, grandmother, and music lover. Her work is frequently included in exhibitions near her home in Bucks County, PA, including most recently the 2022 Phillips Mill Photography Exhibition and the 2022 Diocesan Invitational Art Exhibit at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral. She has led quiet days on contemplative photography and is a firm believer that all art is spiritual practice. She approaches photography as a discipline of receptivity to God’s light and God’s grace manifest in this world.
