The River of Redemption

Fabric Meditation

Artist Statement: This piece is divided into three parts, Heaven, Earth and Hell. The green in the mid-section represents the peace, tranquility and unity we feel when in balance and communion within God’s earthly creation. The light brown below the green represents the thin crust through which we humans so easily fall into sin and separation from God. The layers of increasingly dark colors moving downward, brown, gray, red, and black are representative of the frozen landscapes, the lakes of fire and the bleak and jagged darkness that ensnare and saturate a soul in sin.

The deep blue color placed above the green represents the river through which God’s mercy and forgiveness flows. Purple, the color of Sorrow and Confession, ferries the contrite heart across the River of Redemption to the golden shore of God’s loving mercy and redemption.

A cross is placed in each section as a reminder to the viewer that God is always with us, as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, wherever we are, no matter our condition, His love and his forgiveness is enduring and eternal.

Bio: My work with fabric art derives from my extensive experience in apparel design and construction. My intuitive understanding of the relationships between color, texture and design combined with my passion for detail and devotion to technical mastery makes fabric the natural medium for my artistic expressions. My primary sources of inspiration include wide ranging historical works of art: paintings, sculpture, Byzantine mosaics and iconography, illuminated manuscripts and ancient pottery. I am drawn to subjects reflecting an archetypal feminine beauty, wisdom, grace, courage and strength. Through contemplation of these past works, I am moved to create my own vision with a fresh and modern perspective of the timeless virtues, values and ideals they embody.

More recently my interests have turned toward creating small fabric stitch meditations and abstract collages using scraps of fabrics, trims and other ephemera I have collected over the course of my creative life. remnantworks@comcast.net
