Communion Mandala

Graphite and colored pencil on paper

Artist Statement: Mandalas are made up of symbols and colors that have meaning. In this mandala the butterfly beckons us to keep our faith during the transitions in our lives. The lily means remembrance and promise. The dogwood at the center stands for resurrection, rebirth and strength. The passion flower symbolizes Christ’s crucifixion as well as being a sign of balance and hope.

Colors also have meaning. Here the color blue means loyalty, honesty, trust, calm, responsibility, and commitment to others. Purple stands for ceremony, mystery, wisdom, spiritual enlightenment, and creativity. Yellow speaks of inner vision, encouragement, warmth and honesty, Orange is about assurance, joy and compassion. These are the attributes of Christ that we are called to bring into the world when we leave the communion table. In the circle near the center of this mandala are wheat and grapes, bread and wine that become for Christians the body of Christ. Wheat and grapes, fruit of this good earth that we are slowly but surely destroying. We need to turn this around.
