John the Baptist

Acrylic on canvas

Artist Statement: I was baptized as an adult. When I was submerged, it felt like an electric current was pulsing through the water. It was a transcendent experience, but it was not a magic wand experience. It was the starting point of a lot of hard work that led to inner transformation and a new way of being and relating to God and to others.

When John baptized Jesus the Holy Spirit of Truth descended on Jesus in the form of a dove. How did Jesus and John relate to others? They spoke the truth no matter what the cost. They spoke the truth to power and it cost them their lives. At our baptism we became sharers in the new life of the same Holy Spirit of Truth. We live in a time of lying, subterfuge, obfuscation, deflecting, gas lighting, and spreading misinformation to the detriment of others. We need to take our baptismal vows seriously and turn this around
