Holy Baptism

Artist Statement: Water is water… until the Spirit moves over it, through it. Only then does water become Sanctified, a transforming agent of blessing and commitment. First we give thanks for the gift of water; then we ask the Spirit to sanctify it, so it may cleanse whoever it touches. Unlike Holy Matrimony which quite often ends in divorce, I’ve not heard of anyone divorcing from their baptismal covenant. We may not always live up to that covenant, but through it we are “marked as Christ’s own forever.”

Bio: Sr. Claire Joy is a Life Professed Sister in the Community of the Holy Spirit, a monastic order for women in the Episcopal Church in New York. Before joining the Community, she worked as an artist and graphic designer in television and audio-visual production, animation and magazine design. The Community has encouraged her to pursue her artistic creativity. In addition to exhibitions for ECVA, she designs brochures, invitations, greeting cards, journals and the community’s annual Christmas image.
