Crossing Over

Digital collage

Artist Statement: I don’t consider myself a photographer. Yet when I see something beautiful, I try to capture it with my camera. In these moments of capturing, the subject is always inspiring. With each click, I will most often find myself in the throes of a euphoric moment. These “capturings” bring me hope and a sense that God is powerfully present. I had one of these experiences this past December. I was on top of a mountain in Vermont. There were clouds everywhere, spreading like the sea before me, and I was above those clouds. Looking down on them was a strange perspective: a God view. It was beyond beautiful, and I responded by taking an incredible number of photos. Using a variety of collage techniques, I have incorporated several of those photos into my imaginings of Heaven. I find a great amount of comfort in these creations. I captured a piece of something that has always been elusive and incomprehensible for me. I look at these images and they feel right: this is what I was trying to communicate. In Heaven, I consider that maybe only one thing might be different than it is inside my creations: as Jesus walks among the clouds, I will be walking with Him.

I began this collage with a photo of breathtaking, billowing clouds that stretched for miles. The scene looked like a piece of Heaven. How I ache to be in this beautiful place. I want to enter this painting and walk across that bridge. On Earth, I feel like Jesus is elusive. I never fully see His face, experience His physical touch, or hear His actual voice. I so badly want to catch up with Him, walk beside Him, and cross over with Him to the other side. I am thoroughly convinced that all of this is real, and it will one day be possible for me to know it. Not now, but when the time is right. I’ve still got work to do.
