Spirits of Trees 1

Oil and fabric on canvas
30x20

Artist Statement: The trail through the woods took a steep downward turn and I found myself being pulled forward by gravity faster than my feet would go. I reached out for a tree to steady myself, and as my hand made contact, I experienced a subtle sensation of what I can only describe as the life energy of that tree. It was unexpected, mysterious, and profound. Since then, I have felt a deeper reverence and connection with trees.

This led me to begin a series of paintings which I call "Spirits of Trees", in which the negative space, the space between the trees, is alive with energy and movement - a reminder of the sacred life force in all nature, and the connection between and among trees, and us, and all living beings.

Bio: Ruth Tietjen Councell has been an illustrator, a painter and a teacher. She has practiced and taught watercolor, botanical art, illuminated letters, Chinese style folding books and Ukranian egg decorating. Ruth has also designed and made liturgical hangings for Episcopal churches in New Jersey and Florida, and was co-chair of the Diocese of New Jersey Chapter of ECVA. Now in her 70's, she continues to paint in oil and watercolor, and to work in fabric, often combining painting with fabric.
