Special Blessing

Ink and Pencil Drawing

Artist Statement: Blessings are instruments of peace. In these troubled times, we are comforted by celebrations of healing and love. They distract us from war, politics, and the divisions that are so apparent in today's society and culture wars. I have always been drawn toward the Blessing of the Animals celebration, and the work of St. Francis. This year St. Luke's Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas provided three blessing opportunities for pets and owners to feel the love. My subjects for this ink and pencil drawing were the Rev. Irv Cutter and his daughter Alicia, holding the family dog. The negative space seems to hug the positive space, and the figures are filled with happiness.

The Beatitudes

Bio: Growing up in Amarillo, Texas, Terry Gay Puckett used the tempting blank hallway of her home to scribble her first art works. Her mother quickly gave her crayon and paper and a lifelong drawing habit began. She earned a BFA in studio art at UT Austin, an M.A. in studio art from West Texas State University, and an M.A. from UTSA in Higher Education. After teaching at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio she became an art instructor for St. Philip's College, and started the art department there. Twenty-five years later she retired as a Professor Emeritus from the Fine Arts Department.

Terry was honored as "Artist of the Year" at the San Antonio Art League and Museum in 2009. Her liturgical enamel designs are at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in San Antonio. Twenty-five pieces are included in the Robert B. Green Pavilion collection, one piece is in the McNay docent collection, and a watercolor is in the San Antonio Museum of Art Time Capsule. She exhibits frequently, and is in many private collections. Her work is currently at Mockingbird Handprints in San Antonio, Texas.

Combining art and travel, Terry taught and painted in Guatamala, Mexico, Honduras, Ecuador and Cuba. Frequent New Mexico visits have inspired her work. The creative journey continues, using watercolor, acrylics, vitreous enamels on metal and mixed-media collage. Sketching just for fun remains Terry's favorite past-time. She is a T'ai Chi Chih teacher, with classes currently in Lion's Field in San Antonio.
