Although New York City is not my birthplace it has been
my spiritual and artistic home for 25 years. When I
started the Places of Light series I didn’t know
that my New York is not the city of steel and glass but
a place of contemplation and peace.
Places of Light
is all about light pouring through open doors and
windows to illuminate dark places. My soul makes a
parallel between my own darkness and Him who rescues me
from my darkness. There are different kinds of spiritual
darkness – the darkness of fear, the darkness of
poverty, the darkness of self-hate, the darkness of
hating another, the darkness of addiction, the darkness
of self-centeredness, the darkness of loneliness. To be
in darkness is to be without hope, to be desperate, to
give up. There is nothing more joyous than light when
one is in darkness. Light means hope. Light means
freedom. Light means life. How much more hope, joy and
life there is if it comes in the person of our Lord
Jesus Christ who is our hope, our joy, and our life.
One of the places I photographed was the Friends Meeting
House on Rutherford Place, a Federal style building with
strong neoclassical elements. In “Light #2,” light pours
through the panes of the large windows, making
rectangular spots on the floor and benches of the empty
house of prayer where the whole space has been saturated
with prayer as light overcame the darkness.
