The Rev. Frank Logue
Hymn 93 in the Hymnal 1982 proclaims,
Angels from the realms of glory,
wing your flight o'er all the earth;
ye who sang creation's story
now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Come and worship, come and worship,
worship Christ, the newborn king.
This photograph
shows joy taking flight. It is a non-retouched
photograph taken with a conventional
camera (Nikon FM2). Griffin came up with
the idea for the 1995 card saying that
she wanted to be an angel and she wanted
to fly (she was four years old at the
time). The angel part was easy, but the
flying lessons took a little more
thought.
For those interested in the technical
details, our friend Mark Law loaned us
his studio and a pair of angel wings for
the shoot. A quartz light on the
background created the bright light she
is jumping toward and as a continuous
light source added a blur to give a
sense of motion during the 30th of a
second exposure. The clear face and robe
came from the short burst of flash
through Mark's large soft box also in
the direction Griffin was jumping with a
reflector on the opposite side for fill
light. Griffin jumped up and away from
the column about 20 times and we had our
pick of shots of an angel in flight.
Logue writes, "It was my first artistic
collaboration with my daughter, which
made me even more proud of the results."
The Rev. Frank Logue is the Vicar of
