The Burning Bush

Printmaking ink and gouache on paper

Artist Statement: There are many life changing wilderness journeys depicted in the Bible. I’m especially drawn to the story of Moses’ journey to the far side of the wilderness where God appears to him in the form of a bush that burns but is not consumed. I’ve done several artworks depicting this scene. This most recent version emphasizes the energy of fire. Fire consumes dross and refines gold. It also enlightens, illumines and transforms. Moses stands on holy ground near the fire’s light and energy and is lifted out of his limitations. He returns home from the wilderness energized and ready to answer God’s call to become involved with his people and lead them out of exile and into the Promised Land. I can relate to Moses. Whether literal or metaphorical, wilderness journeys have been an integral part of my personal and spiritual growth. Like spiritual rocket fuel, they have propelled me forward to a new and better place, ready for the next phase of the journey.
