Resident Alien: Zip Codes

40 x 40"

Artist Statement: The house where I currently live is the 37th residence of my life. It was not until I experienced move number 36 that I came to realize that this exceptional level of mobility had powerfully impacted my psyche, my relationships, my view of the world, and my faith journey. Not surprisingly, the "Stories from the Road" theme struck a chord deep in my heart.

The work I am submitting for consideration is from a body of work titled
Resident Alien. Created on layered paper packing blankets from our most recent relocation, this work uses zip codes to depict how these many relocations have resulted in a deep-seated confusion about time, place, and identity.

Creating this body of work helped me process the negative aspects of high mobility and to discern how God has used it to help me develop strengths and resilience.

Bio: I am a designer/artist whose creative impulse finds expression in work purposed for liturgical use and work exploring the intersection of life and faith in my personal journey. My work is informed by academic degrees in journalism and theology, extensive studies in art and surface design, and experiences as a parish pastor and published author.
