Here Christ is soaring
heavenward, lifting us all and blessing us with His spirit. This
piece was given to Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown, Virginia,
in appreciation for all the church means to me. |

I have been
working with wood for the last 20 years. Before that, I ran a
charter boat in the Virgin Islands. While living on our
sailboat, I raised two children, and lived a life full of some
joy and many missteps and mistakes.
When I found myself back in this country, I cast about for
something to do. My father’s wood working shop was not being
used so I started to putter around making historic figures as
marionettes. Much to my surprise, they sold. I soon cut the
strings and mounted the figures on bases while leaving most with
some movable parts.
I think of my work as contemporary folk art: comparable to what
our grandfathers would have made as toys for their children
using the tools at hand. While these sculptures are not quite
toys, I always hope they’ll evoke a sense of playful evolvement
with the viewer.
Over the years, the discovery of, and attachment to, creativity
has given me much joy and occupation. I feel certain relatedness
to the Original Creator that cannot be expressed in words, only
in doing.Carolyn Rhoads
