The "Holy Silence" is a less
familiar icon type, a symbolic representation of Christ as a
young and beardless (and sometimes, as here, female) angel with
hands crossed in silent contemplation. It was popular in
18th-19th century Russia and is strongly associated with the
practice of "the prayer of the heart" or the Jesus Prayer.
This icon was painted in 2006; based primarily on a drawing by
my teacher Vladislav Andrejev. The dark brown background and the
archangels in the 4 corners were inspired by several historic
icons of the Holy Silence. The vertical inscriptions on the
sides come from "The Way of a Pilgrim" and describe the
anonymous writer's delight in the prayer of the heart. |

I've been
painting icons since 1997, just love this artform and teach it
informally. I'm an architect and also enjoy crafts, particularly
bead jewelry.
