Peter’s offer to
prepare dwellings for Jesus, along with Elijah and Moses,
captured my attention and my imagination as I heard with new
ears the reading of the Transfiguration of Jesus, Luke 9: 28-36,
a few weeks ago. This spoke to me of providing shelter to
homeless men and women as my church did Christmas night and the
following week; our guests wore the faces of Christ. In this
painting I see the light, and hear the call to us to be the
light of Jesus, the face of Jesus, every day, everywhere, to
everyone.
A friend says the painting is New Orleans where I once lived,
its ruined houses, the dark, stormy sky, and the light of hope
breaking out powerfully in the midst of it all, another kind of
transfiguration. I see that, too.
Psalm 34: 3-5, 8 speaks of radiance:
Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord,
let us exalt his name forever.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me out of all my terror.
Look upon him and be radiant
and let not your faces be ashamed.
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are they who trust in him. |
