This was my take-off on a banner
design I had seen before. The background fabric is silk matka,
frayed at the edges, rather than hemmed. The top layer is silk
chiffon, torn and left raw rather than cut and hemmed. I intended
to capture the moment when the curtain of the temple is torn in two. The
text, in silk dupioni, is partially obscured by the chiffon layer,
but as breezes move the chiffon, the text is fully visible. I
think it creates a very strong sense of mood on this key day in Holy
Week.
I have been creating one-of-a-kind vestments and banners for about
two years. I tend to approach each banner from a graphic design standpoint,
using computer software such as Illustrator to create the design,
and using the most beautiful fabrics I can find to realize that design.
I hope that my work achieves a modern expression of ancient Christian
traditions.
