Elijah
and the Fiery Chariot One of the most compelling aspects of Knipper's paintings are their striking physicality. The tactile record of movement and gesture are the strengths of his work. His oeuvre is anchored in the long tradition of Biblical narrative painting and owes much to the Baroque and German Expressionist movements. In the Old Testament story the prophet Elijah departs from the earth in a chariot of fire, witnessed by his successor Elisha. A whirlwind surrounds Elijah as he is transported to the heavens. Knipper's work does not attempt to recreate reality, but serves the narrative by creating a visually compelling drama. |
