Meanings An antique leather book cover, hand inscriptions, obscured texts, pages of a book ... a reading. After the return from captivity, the Book of Nehemiah records that Ezra read to the people of Israel from the Law. In this work, several chapters from the Book of Nehemiah are buried beneath layers of Japanese rice papers. Handwritten in pencil over the text, the Ten Commandments are barely decipherable. The gilded central panel contains the commandments in Hebrew text and calls our imagination to relate the components of the piece. Sandra Bowden's work is a visual meditation on time. The mystery of the word as a vehicle of communication across generations has been an important component of her personal iconography, using segments of language and text as design within the image.
