The issue of darkness and light relates to the contrasting planes of these works but more importantly, to the participatory nature of this work: it is entirely hands on, tactile, communal in nature. People sit at the black granite table, and pick up, handle, and move the pieces around. It is the sacramental and liturgical light emphasizing our coming together "around the table" in which creating is shared both for the participant and the artist.
