Artist Statement: Personal philosophy’s a funny thing. It spills out no matter what you do: writing, planting a garden, driving a vehicle, telling a joke, pushing a shopping cart, greeting another person and a new day, and certainly wielding a paintbrush.

Each step and interaction we take weaves and deposits our philosophical beliefs onto our path, and into our lives, revealing who we are, and what makes us “tick.” And sometimes, our philosophy sticks to the soles of our feet, and we haul it around in self indulgence. This is where static minds come into play, and it’s a dead end when it comes to creating art.

To be effective, art must be filled with philosophical energy. It must be interactive; allowed to slip off of our soles, and out of our souls. It must join communal footprints, and evolve into the magic of “Community.”

Community is essential. It’s a solid base, where individual “voices” are encouraged to sing their own song, but where solos converge into a unified whole, building outward and upward. From this layered combination of impulse, energy, faith and hope, life-building innovation emerges, feeding creativity; Art occurs.

As a former teacher, free-lance artist and current exhibitor in public art venues, I honor ECVA’s commitment to “Community,” and its resultant nurturing of love and hope.
