“Pax Americana” is
my reflection on the death penalty. While contemplating a name for
this mosaic, I came across my title in the introduction to Mark Lewis
Taylor’s book “The Executed God.” During early
Christianity, the Caesars enforced Pax Romana, which promoted the
façade of peace at all costs. Similar to the controlling Roman
peace, “Pax Americana” represents a perversion of justice.
Within this dehumanizing practice, Jesus was executed on the cross
on Good Friday. His death was one of many, resulting from this common,
terror-provoking tool utilized by the powerful Roman regime to maintain
an illusion of peace rather than embracing the reality of true peace. “Pax
Americana” artistically represents my hope to abolish capital
punishment.
