John Moody

Most of my work is from nature, the raw material of creation, and the Holy Spirit I think is part and parcel of the God who creates. I am inspired by what I see and what I experience, particularly of late in recent works, as the compensatory quality of nature making for wholeness. What makes me stop and look and which strikes me in the images that I choose to paint is the way nature "fills in the gaps", seemingly in haphazard fashion, bringing forth forms which beautifully complement one another, strengthen and allow for each other, compensating for strengths and weaknesses, as growing things are urged on to fruition by the life force of creation itself. I see that as metaphor and example of the way the Holy Spirit urges all life on to wholeness and completion.

I suppose that I am responding to that abiding hope, deep in my heart, as the fruition of the gift of life. This exhibit of ECVA has helped me to make these more specific connections.

John Moody returned to painting full time in 1991. In mid-career in the ordained ministry of the Episcopal Church, he received a Master's Degree in painting and sculpture after which his work took him into parish and community arts administration and program direction. He exhibits in solo and group shows in New York City and the Hudson Valley region.
