Christ Saving Peter by Suzanne Schleck (Egg tempera

By definition, painting an icon is an encounter with the
Spirit of God, often as manifested in the lives of his
saints. This is necessarily an experience of growth.
The icon of Christ extending a saving hand to Peter shows
that God's self-appointed work is to save us, even though
we're drowning ourselves.
