Mended Hearts
(The Heart Series)

The
Heart collection was inspired during a day watching open
heart-surgery
as a chaplain intern at Sibley Memorial
Hospital, Washington, DC. The surgeon held the beating heart
in his palm. My heart “was in my mouth” as I watched this
living organ be turned off. Still, with no life, it became
just a grey hunk of meat. At that moment I knew the meaning of
life and God.
The experience was given personal meaning when I experienced
an unnecessary heart “accident” that threatened my life.
Creating art provides
an opportunity to authenticate and
assimilate these experiences into my emotional system and my
identity.
