Brandon Hudson

St. John the Forerunner

Artist Statement:John the Baptist proclaimed of Jesus, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (Jn. 1:29). And of his own life John said, "He must increase, but I must decrease" (Jn. 3:30). Is this not the essence of the Christian life-- to continually point toward Jesus our Savior, striving to surrender ourselves to His service? This icon is patterned after a fifteenth century icon in the Byzantine style. In many Orthodox traditions John the Baptist is known as John the Forerunner, thus emphasizing his role as one sent ahead of Christ to testify to the Light. This image shows John not as he was in life, but in his heavenly, glorified form. He is still bowing in prayer toward our Savior; his entire being throughout life, death, and new life paying homage to The Lord.
