And Love Has Wings
by Claudia L. Smith
Acrylic, 1987, 16" x 20"

Although I painted "And Love Has Wings" 20 years ago, I believe that it epitomizes the love between mother and child.  Art is ageless, as is the universal joy of birth. When I began this painting, I wanted to express the excitement of discovery and expectation, that moment of perfect connection, where two become one, where mother and child "feast" on each other.
I believe that that magical moment happened when Mary held Jesus in her arms.  Mother Mary and Jesus the Christ Child would have experienced it, even if he had not been destined to be God's gift of salvation and great joy.
I incorporated doves into the painting because they symbolize peace, and the nurturing goodness of love.

Claudia L. Smith is a Michigan State graduate, and former art teacher, who also has had experience in interior design, mural and faux wall paintings, illustration, newspaper cartooning and writing.  She and her husband reside in Fountain Hills, Arizona.     She is a charter member of the Fountain Hills Cultural Council, has served on its board of directors, is a member of the Fountain Hills Art League, Fountain Hills Christian Writers Group, and chairperson of the Arts Council for St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church, in Scottsdale, where she is also a lector.
