A Balm in Gilead

from Lift Every Voice and Sing

Artist Statement: The chorus from the hymn is: “There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole, there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul…” This painting illustrates the healing waters of redemption flowing (gushing?) over the many fires in my life whether they are of my own desires or those that arrive unbidden.

Bio: I began painting over thirty years ago when I moved to Eastern North Carolina from my native Iowa. In that time, I have studied painting with several internationally and nationally acclaimed artists that have influenced my work including Beverly McIver, Skip Lawrence, Alex Powers, and Judi Betts. I have been represented by several galleries including City Art Works, Clark Gallery, and Carolina Creations and my work has been featured in group and solo shows in Eastern North Carolina. My work has been purchased for private and corporate collections throughout the East Coast. I have been a participating member of ECVA for ten years and have been included in many online exhibitions during that time.

I am a life long Episcopalian and have been active in the church’s mission throughout my adult life. My daughter is an Episcopal priest serving as Assisting Priest for Children’s Education at Holy Trinity, Fayetteville, NC. Her husband, Jeff, is rector at Holy Trinity Fayetteville, NC.
