Mourning Dove

Photograph

Artist Statement: Walking the Camino, I feared I would be unable to continue walking. We reached the 12th century Iglesia de Santiago where very ill pilgrims entered the Puerta del Perdon and were given a special blessing and pardon. Our pilgrimage leader said that if we had made it this far, it was enough and I received my scallop shell. The picture of the dove on the cross in the cemetery expressed the mourning I felt and the grace with which my suffering was received. My suffering was over, and I was carried the rest of the way by love.

Bio: In my vocation as priest and as artist, I endeavor to evoke the holy. I use visual art, writing, meditation, and other devotional practices to invite others to awaken to the mystery of love at the heart of the universe, risk sacred encounter, and cross the threshold of their heart's deepest hopes.
