Pat Merriman

Let In Light

Artist Statement: This collage was inspired by Leonard Cohen’s song "Anthem"; and the refrain that the "crack in the Liberty Bell lets in the light". I was led to the biography of Fredrick Douglas, speeches by Abraham Lincoln, quotations from "Bartlett’s Quotations", excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Almost all the quotations from Plato through present times cited the responsibility of preserving liberty; often with citations of abuse of power. It was an amazing year long journey summing up my fervent belief in Jesus’ main precept that "We are our Brothers' Keepers".

Bio: Pat Merriman is a visual artist who often does collages. This year many of her paintings and collages were inspired by songs and were exhibited in June with Spotify QR codes so viewers could participate with Pat in making the scenes visual as well as auditory. Pat is in her mid-eighties and calls herself the “grandma Moses” of the gallery she co-founded in Hillsborough, NC.
