When Shadows Are Long

Oil
30 inches x 40 inches

Artist Statement: When Shadows Are Long is the title of this painting but also a description of our world today. I seem to see more shadows than light in our world when I read the paper or watch the news. Yet when I do see light what a wonder it is! Barbara Brown Taylor in her book, Holy Envy, asks, “How do you change a mind that knows nothing about its own shadows?” I think as we see our own shadows then we are able to see the Christ in others and maybe then we will reflect the light of God brightening this world full of shadows.

Bio: I have always been interested in art but didn't start painting until 1995 while living in Clayton, NC. I now work mostly in water soluble oils. For over 20 years I had the joy of painting with a group of ladies who encouraged and critiqued my work until aging for some no longer permitted us to paint together. What a gift they all were to me. I now live in Wilmington, NC and continue to pursue painting that I pray glorifies God.
