Aftermath
I
did not intend to do a piece of art that intentionally addressed the
events of September 11, 2001. I simply was playing with a new surface
(Tygerag, a synthetic "paper") in an attempt to see if I could
collage "stuff" onto it. The "stuff", the New York
Times of Sunday, September 23, was covering my work table. So with acrylics,
gel medium, and my table cover, my eyes, hands and mind became engrossed
in tearing snippets of this word, that image, painting this color, that
dark, and gluing this one here, that one there.
Eventually
I became aware that I was affirming life in the midst of the death,
the fear, and the darkness of September 11. I believe that through words,
images, surfaces, and textures, I amaffirming a common life for all
of us who love our freedoms not only here in the United States, but
for all peoples who value life over death. The "Aftermath"
for me is in affirming life for all persons, in all cultures, and of
all faiths.
