Hildegard von Bingen

Oil over acrylic on canvas
8" wide x 10" high

Artist Statement: Thinking about mother earth, I began to revisit Hildegard von Bingen’s writings and teachings. Hildegard of Bingen OSB, also known as Saint Hildegard and the Sibyl of the Rhine, was a German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, and polymath. She is one of the best-known composers of sacred monophony, as well as the most-recorded in modern history. This quote by her sums up the inspiration for this interpretive painting of her:

“I am the fiery life of the essence of God; I am the flame above the beauty in the fields; I shine in the waters; I burn in the sun, the moon, and the stars. And with the airy wind, I quicken all things vitally by an unseen, all-sustaining life.” ― Hildegard of Bingen
