At various times in the Bible Jesus is referred to as our rock, our foundation, and our chief cornerstone. These references to Jesus as a rock inspired Edward Mote, a pastor at Rehobeth Baptist Church in West Sussex England, to write in 1834 the famous hymn, “My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less.” The hymn’s popular refrain draws upon the biblical imagery of Christ as a rock when it states “On Christ the solid Rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand. When darkness seems to hide His face. I rest on His unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale. My anchor holds within the veil. On Christ the solid Rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand.”
