The juxtaposition of the Spanish cross, Hebrew Bible, antique slave shackles, and Navajo blanket symbolizes the persecution of the Jews and the crucifixion of Jesus by the Roman Empire, and the brutal bondage of the Native and African Americans by the Spanish and English colonizers and slave owners. Though these oppressions occurred in the distant past, we continue to bear their wounds, individually and collectively. Recent events have revealed our continued complicity with the injustices, inequalities, and inequities of our social and racial structures, and the necessity for all of us to have a heart for justice in a broken world. |
