Labor of Love

Fabric

Artist Statement: Boro (“rags”) is an ancient technique originating in the northern prefectures of Japan that is characterized by fabric patches and coarse hand stitching. Born of necessity in a time when any scrap of fabric was a treasured resource, the Boro technique was especially prevalent on garments worn by common laborers.

Labor of Love references the boro aesthetic in imaging Creator God as a three-dimensional laborer’s coat. The work invites viewers to enter into the ongoing labor of Creator God in creating, recreating, and sustaining this fragile earth.
