Ave Maris Stella
Acrylic on canvas
36 by 48
inches
This piece is inspired by the 8th Century Marian hymn, "Ave Maris Stella"
(Hail, Star of the Sea). In biblical narratives, the sea is symbolic of
chaos and death, which is why in Genesis the Spirit of God hovered over
the chaotic waters and brought forth order (Gen. 1:2), and in Revelation
the new heaven and new earth will have no sea (Rev. 21:1).
The "Star of
the Sea" is the fixed and constant point of light and hope by which we can
navigate our world that is fraught with challenges, sorrows and chaos,
guiding us in our journey of salvation to new and eternal life.
"If the winds of temptation arise; If you are driven upon the rocks of
tribulation look to the star, call on Mary; If you are tossed upon the
waves of pride, of ambition, of envy, of rivalry, look to the star, call
on Mary." -St. Bernard of Clairvaux (d.1153)
