The Auction
The goat ministry theoretically culminated in a gala auction at the end
of September 2006, roughly ten months after the church’s adoption of the
goats.
Although stopping short of “black tie optional,” it was indeed a
gala affair. In addition to the goats, selected artworks from talented parishioners
were donated to the cause. St. Michael’s is lucky in that it numbers among
its members a professional auctioneer, who gladly donated his services. This
event served to raise over $13,000.00 for the church. More importantly, it was
a lot of fun for all involved. |

It seems assured that the goats will make their presence
known at St. Michael’s for years to come. Part of the credit goes
to the parishioners who banded together to ensure that the winged “MichaelAngelGoat” could
be won at auction and donated back to the church. Part goes to the creative
individuals and teams who decorated the goats so artistically. And part
of course goes to Don Spriggs, who started it all. Mostly, however, the “out
of nowhere” goats brought a sense of fun, community, and spiritual
purpose to St. Michael’s, and the parishioners participated joyfully
and for good cause. This sense of spirit will not soon
fade.
As the church's new rector, the Rev. Greg Hodgson, told
the newspaper reporter with a twinkle in his eye, "It's wonderful.
. . . We have beatified them and count them among the
saints of God. It's a grand thing for a church in today's society to
play with." |
