Artist Statement: “We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent and the divine is shining through it all the time.” - Thomas Merton

I paint landscapes in order to feel free. While painting I am alone yet surrounded by the energies of space and light and sky. Though grounded in the earth, my head is in the clouds. I am lost in the colors and the movement of the breeze. Sometimes there is absolute silence.

This current series, “Forest Edge” is my response to a specific location. Frequently seen, the permeable wall of the edge of the forest is often back-lit. Deer and hawks and foxes move through from time to time. This work is deliberatively abstracted in order for the artist and the moment to inhabit the marks and the spaces between.

Bio: Thayne received a MA from Rutgers University in studio art after completely her BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. She has steadily created and exhibited her work in all the areas that she has lived with her husband and three children. Her icons have been installed in church and monastic settings in Georgia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Throughout her career Thayne has explored—and continues to explore—oil, egg tempera, ink, pastel and bronze, often carrying subject matter across media.
