Artist Statement: The first piece in the series is a reversible swing jacket. The jacket required a bold accent piece to provide central interest for the frontal design; I selected this eye catching “Fugiwara” cotton fabric by textile designer, Susan B. Faeder for that purpose. At the time my goal was to complete the jacket; I had no particular intention about creating the series that was to evolve from the remnant pieces resulting from the initial project itself. It was over time, that I simply found myself returning not only to the compelling visages of samurai warriors, but also to the myriad of other interesting elements in the fabric that I could isolate and transfer to the other projects in my FUGIWARA series.

Bio: Kerri Jones, fabric artist, is a native of the Pacific Northwest. Her lifelong interest in fabrics and textiles encompasses a number of disciplines and applications beginning with her early work in apparel design and construction, historic costume, liturgical vestments and textile pieces, also including work with fabric mosaics, quilting. More recently her interests have turned to creating small fabric stitch meditations and abstract collages using scraps of fabrics, trims and other ephemera she has collected over the course of her creative life.
