El Jardinero

Watercolor and colored pencil

Artist Statement: I sat under an umbrella at Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, viewing volcanoes in the mist across the lake, and the six acres of tropical flower gardens at Hotel Atitlan. A gardener was pruning flowers attentively in the pots that surrounded the swimming pool. Lovingly he arranged the flowers as he took a snip here and a clip there, carefully sculpting them. Maybe that is what God is doing for us; pruning us into better plants as we grow, instead of allowing us to bloom willy nilly, hither and yon. He makes us more beautiful than we would be if we followed our own random path.
