Wallyhouse Prayer Wall, Detail 2

Acrylic and wire on wood
72"x18"
Rolls of paper scraps tucked in wire

Artist Statement: I recently had the opportunity to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Most moving to me were the walls: the Western Wall in Jerusalem where the devout pray and leave petitions written on scraps of paper tucked in its crevices and the Israeli West Bank wall that separates the Palestinians from the Jews. Laying my hands on both of these walls was a powerful moment of calling out to our God for peace and justice. I have carried that experience to Hawa'i where I have created a small wall, 72"x18" for the poor and local parishioners to tuck their petitions. .

Bio: Making art is ministry, not only in the sharing of my work, but more in communal art projects with at-risk and houseless communities. I am a Third Order Franciscan Catholic Worker, which basically means I live in voluntary poverty while walking with and giving hospitality to, as best I can, the poor. Currently, I am living in Honolulu, Hawa'i where the houseless population is vast. We have as a part of our CW house an open art studio for the houseless and at-risk youth. In addition, I continue in my own work of painting, art quilts and vestments.
