The Mind Cage

Artist Statement: In this oil painting, “The Mind Cage,” is the suffering of personality and mental disorder. The suffering is all in the mind which makes the mind the cage or prison. Sometimes the mind is the first thing to stop us from faith, hope and trust. We reason things out and, in many cases, we build our own prisons that hinder us from experiencing freedom. The woman represents the perfection of the physical appearance and yet, she lives suffering in her own mind. The Bald Eagle represents freedom.

Disorders are not of one’s own doing but, once recognized, there is help. Not all mental dysfunction is a disorder. Issues with self-esteem is probably one of the biggest problems we have in humanity. Mental abuse takes its toll on many children and affects them into their adult years. I bear witness to the effects of this in my own life.

The scripture that comes to mind with this painting, Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and perfect.

What is perfect? Love. .

Bio: I currently work full time as a manager for a printing company handling the graphic design end of things. I have a passion for creating. Painting is something that I just can't seem to put away. I have exhibited in online galleries as well as more local galleries in North Carolina. Most of my paintings are in pastel or oil. I create the real in the surreal by the display of symbolic imagery. I use the symbolic imagery to creatively explore the philosophical, psychological and spiritual aspects of humanity and the human spirit
