Hail Mary, Maine
Digital photograph

At a street festival in Maine, I was one of dozens who had gathered to watch a greased-pole climbing contest. From where I stood, this young climber, her towel aloft in the wind, her feet bound in rags, appeared to be a modern-day Gabriel, hailing Mary.
