This is one in a series of three images, for which I've written one statement: Courage, Authenticity, Hope: A triptych of Ubuntu images from the making of the film “Voices of Witness Africa,” by Cynthia Black.

Victor Juliet embodies what it means to be fully human, fully alive. For many years Victor has put his life on the line in Uganda on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. As a trans person living in a country that wants to pretend he doesn’t exist, he has been beaten, tortured, and imprisoned. Yet he has amazing faith. And he is a person who despite enormous challenges continues to choose to live authentically who he believes God has called him to be.

“At some point I felt I was free, I was reconciled and knew God was not mad at me. I knew that He loves me and delights in me like He has said. ...I used to see him as a lion, a lion that was going to eat me up. ...I was scared of facing God so many times, and now I am seeing a friend that just brings me peace.” Victor Juliet, Uganda.
