ECVA Newsletter

February, 2004

A new year is upon us as we look back at the year that has ended, and look forward to the year to come. Changes that began at ECVA before Christmas will continue into the New Year as we explore ways to examine the role of the visual arts in the Episcopal Church.

ECVA is more than just a website; it is a community of artists and individuals who have an appreciation of how art can influence our spiritual well being. As a community, we explore the visual arts as it is used within our churches and as a part of our worship. And as individuals within this community, we need your participation.

For three years now ECVA has been showcasing art through online exhibitions, but there are other ways to participate at ECVA. If your church has a work of art, we would like to hear about it for Art/Community/Story. If you have a project that incorporates the visual arts and involves the members of the church, tell us about it for Community Arts. If you have created a series of work that follows a single theme, send us the images and a statement for Visual Essay. If you have written an essay or story about art and religion, send it to us for Word & Image. Send your submissions to editor@ecva.org.

We have just started the ECVA Newsletter and will be keeping you informed with what is happening at the ECVA website, but we would also like to share news about members of ECVA. Please send news items to editor@ecva.org.

And if you are an artist or an individual with an interest in the visual arts and the Episcopal Church, please join our community at ECVA Registry.

We would also like to hear from you, so send questions and comments to editor@ecva.org.

Join with us for a wonderful year ahead.

Above the altar at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church is a modern cruciform sculpture created by artist Ann Cowperthwaite. Designed as a representation of the teachings of the church’s namesake, Bede the Venerable, his words are incorporated into the sculpture that "Christ is the Morning Star . . .".
