Curator's Statement

Mary Jane Miller Sacraments reflect church community and how we see ourselves through song, praise, image, prayer, and liturgy. Art is an artist's testament to our care for one another, our communion with Mother Earth, and our stewardship of the planet. The art and artist commentaries are diverse, as they each illustrate versions and aspects of how we think about the seven sacraments and our mother Earth.

Sr. Clair Joy - Contemporary digital image and texture images are striking. Michael Prettyman - Fire is a common theme in spirituality. His images demand we react to the heat and violence of wind-swept landscapes burning out of control before God and all of Creation. Jack Pachuta submitted several works and the diversity makes one realize that many new questions and seeking new answers are part of these times we are faced with today. In his Last Supper, he gave Judas a blurry halo, a clever idea. Claudia Smith captures the energy of spirit and water all in one design movement.“The sacrament of Holy Baptism is visible to us as it occurs”.

The show includes 38 images from 21 artists. Theirs is a multifaceted expression of love for sacrament, life, beauty. In looking over past exhibitions, I see our membership has many beautiful works and some deep expressions in their text and prayers.

Alisa E. Clark "My paintbrush shows me that God can call us to go down deep into the dark waters, but it’s for our faith to be new again." Elizabeth de Sherbinin "It is a reminder to look, care for, and treasure the many places on this planet we love or care about." Anne Cameron Cutri "I took images of cancer cells and collaged them on the center panel and then painted over them while praying for healing of all who have cancer." Jeanelle McCall through her piece called Unction, she says, "I was not aware of the potential of this ritual."

SEVEN SACRAMENTS FOR OUR EARTH
Eucharist : How do we break bread together globally?
Baptism : How do we feel born again, like spring brings new life burst forth in glory?
Unction : Healing. Where does love and power to heal come from? Can we heal our Earth?
Marriage : Who or what have we made a lifelong commitment in the sight of God?
Priesthood : Before what do we prostrate ourselves, In service and humility?
Confession : Have we turned away from our Creator and or Creation?
Confirmation : Our commitment to Earth is a conscious act as part of a greater community.
