Artist Statement: While working on this series of artworks I have explored creating loosely in the round. Following various circular motifs I mixed a variety of materials from ceramic, mortar, broken dishes, stone, wood, bone and glass to add voice to emotions, events and occurrences around me.
Chaos is a commentary on the cacophony of our daily news cycle.
Circuitous is a similar examination to the never-ending detours to get to truth.
Confluence is an awareness of consumption versus conservation specific to the Colorado River - my backyard
Glorified is the notion of everyday saints all around us, living lives to the glory of God.
Passion is contemplation of the crucifixion and resurrection and the Trinity.
Bio: Kathy Thaden’s mosaics range from abstract to commissioned work. Inspired by nature and the desert Southwest, she strives to understand our role within society, expressing care for all humanity and creation, seeking to engage the viewer in the visual narrative.
“It is important to me in our ‘throw-away’ consumer culture to reinvent discarded items or swap glass - finding beauty in the brokenness - and letting nothing be wasted. My art is informed by my faith, as well as a call to reconciliation with one another.”
A full-time studio artist working in Western Colorado, she is a professional member of the Society of American Mosaic. Artist, Stained Glass Association of America, Episcopal Church and Visual Arts, and founding member and Past-President of the Colorado Mosaic Artists. Kathy teaches mosaic workshops in-person and online and leads mosaic retreats.
