Artist Statement: My series of saints has been painted in watercolor, over a long period of time. I have been interested in saints and their stories since I was a child. My mother collected Mexican Retablos, painted on tin, which are visual prayers dedicated to special saints in gratitude for healings. I moved to South Texas in 1963 and have traveled frequently into Mexico since the early ’60’s. At this point I I began collecting Retablos also. This fired up a desire to know the stories paint my own versions. Clients and friends have requested that I paint certain saints and archangels, and I love letting my imagination lead the way when I interpret them.
Bio: Growing up in Amarillo, Texas, Terry Gay Puckett's home had tempting blank walls to scribble on. Her mother quickly gave her paper and crayons to use instead, and a lifelong drawing habit began.
Terry earned a BFA in studio art at UT Austin, an M.A. in studio art from West Texas State University, and an M.A. from UTSA in Higher Education. She first taught at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio. Next she became an instructor for St. Philip’s College, and twenty-five years later she retired as Professor Emeritus from the Fine Arts Department. She has been living and working in San Antonio, Texas for the past 60 years.
Combining art and travel, she taught and painted in Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, Ecuador, and Cuba, and these journeys have inspired her work.
Terry was honored as "Artist of the Year" for the San Antonio Art League and Museum in 2009 in San Antonio. Her liturgical enamel designs are at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Twenty-five pieces her art are included in the Robert B. Green Hospital Pavilion collection.
She is the featured artist in an upcoming exhibition for Abode at the Episcopal Church of Reconciliation in May 2023. Her artistic journey continues with watercolor, acrylics, vitreous enamels on metal and mixed media collage. Sketching for fun with the San Antonio Urban Sketchers is favorite pastime. She is also a certified instructor of T’ai Chi Chih, a moving meditation, and teaches at Lion’s Field in San Antonio.
